Conteh Urges Bio to Reconsider Assenting to Constitutional Bill

CAN Executive Director Thomas Moore Conteh has warned that President Julius Maada Bio could damage his credibility and political legacy if he assents to the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill.

Speaking on Liberty Online TV, Conteh said signing the Bill into law would be disappointing and could leave a lasting mark on President Bio’s record, while potentially undermining constitutional principles and citizens’ rights to speak freely.

He argued that the decision could also affect national unity, warning that assenting to the Bill could divide the country rather than bring citizens together.

Conteh said President Bio currently has an opportunity to be remembered for successfully overseeing constitutional reform, but that achievement could be overshadowed by controversy surrounding the Bill and the process through which it was approved.

His comments come amid continued debate over the proposed amendments, with civil society groups and political actors calling for greater scrutiny. Supporters say the reforms could strengthen Sierra Leone’s democratic and governance framework, while critics have raised concerns about the parliamentary process and wider implications of some provisions.

Conteh urged the President to carefully consider the national and international attention surrounding the Bill and its potential consequences for his credibility, presidency and legacy.
