The high-profile gold scam trial involving Admire Bio Jalloh and her husband encountered further delays on Thursday, July 23, 2026, after the defendants failed to appear before Magistrate Brima Jah. Their unexplained absence prompted immediate legal repercussions, including the remand of a surety for disrespectful conduct.
The defendants face serious charges including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining money by false pretenses, and money laundering. The prosecution, led by State Counsel Yusifu Isaac Sesay, emphasized the gravity of the case, which centers on the alleged loss of US$210,000 by complainants Fanni Giuseppe and Alfio Siracusa.
The allegations suggest that between August 10 and 14, 2025, the accused conspired with unknown parties to defraud the complainants by falsely claiming GAN Minerals Sierra Leone Limited was a licensed gold trading entity.
The scam reportedly involved two transactions: an initial US$100,000 followed by an additional US$110,000, for the purported sale of three kilograms of gold.
In addition to the fraud charges, the defendants are accused of unlawfully selling gold without legal authority and evading taxes. While the defense argued the absence was due to bereavement and the lead counsel being out of the jurisdiction, the prosecution maintained that court attendance is mandatory.
Magistrate Brima Jah expressed concern over the conduct of the sureties.
Specifically, the court noted a persistent lack of decorum from the second surety, who was seen standing with hands in pockets. Consequently, the magistrate ordered that this surety be remanded in custody for 24 hours to uphold the integrity of the judicial process.
The court adjourned the proceedings to July 30, 2026. This case continues to draw significant public attention due to the high financial stakes and the serious nature of the transnational fraud allegations involved.
