Dr. Kelfala Marah, a former Minister of Finance and a candidate for the All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer position, presented his detailed vision for Sierra Leone’s economic recovery, democratic reforms within the APC, and national development.
Dr. Marah began by acknowledging the economic successes achieved by the APC government under former President Ernest Bai Koroma.
He described the period before the Ebola outbreak as a time of significant economic growth for Sierra Leone, placing it among the fastest-growing economies worldwide. He noted that the Ebola epidemic severely disrupted this progress but expressed his belief that continued APC governance would have restored economic stability and growth.
Dr. Marah highlighted his active participation in development initiatives during his ministerial tenure, overseeing 862 development projects with a particular emphasis on the agricultural sector. He cited agricultural programs that improved farming productivity and promoted sustainable livelihoods. Addressing questions about his readiness for the flagbearer role and potentially the presidency, Dr. Marah affirmed that he has a vision and comprehensive strategies closely aligned with the aspirations of the people.
He described his ambition as fundamentally rooted in a commitment to protect the will of the people, particularly in the context of the 2023 elections, and pledged to consistently uphold democratic rights.
He further elaborated on his significant role in advocating for the implementation of recommendations from the Tripartite Committee, expressing his unwavering support for the full enforcement of its findings. When questioned about the APC’s efforts to rebuild public trust, Dr. Marah highlighted internal reforms currently underway.
These include efforts to re-establish internal democracy through grassroots engagement, equitable representation, and continuous dialogue with party stakeholders nationwide. According to Dr. Marah, party leaders are committed to fostering a level playing field to enhance unity and transparency within the APC.
Dr. Marah argued that his extensive experience working with both local and international institutions sets him apart from other candidates, providing him with a solid foundation in governance and policy development. He emphasized the importance of staying connected with the daily realities of ordinary citizens, explaining that his frequent community outreach efforts are not politically motivated but stem from his enduring commitment to public service. He stated that this is not a performative endeavor and that he has been engaged in community development since his university years, during which he served as Kono Youth President and student advocate.
Turning his attention to the current government, Dr. Marah expressed concern about what he described as “unconscionable public spending,” asserting that the administration is operating beyond its fiscal capacity. He proposed fiscal rationalization as a sustainable solution to Sierra Leone’s economic challenges—a suggestion he has previously shared with government officials despite his position in the opposition.
He remarked that many politicians would not seek to offer substantive solutions when not in power, but he believes responsible leadership requires everyone to contribute ideas to advance the nation.
Dr. Marah concluded by reiterating his belief in visionary leadership and pragmatic governance, underpinned by experience, inclusivity, and accountability. His message was clear: Sierra Leone needs determined yet informed leadership that is responsive to the citizenry, addresses economic mismanagement, and restores public trust—both within the APC and across the nation.
