ECOWAS Condemns Benin Coup Attempt, Promises Accountability

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a forceful condemnation of the attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, reaffirming the regional body’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance and constitutional order. In a statement released from Abuja on 7 December 2025, ECOWAS characterized the coup attempt as a direct breach of Benin’s Constitution and a subversion of the democratic mandate of its citizenry.

The regional bloc commended the swift and effective response by the Government of Benin and the Republican Army in containing the situation and preventing further destabilization. Crucially, ECOWAS placed full accountability for any resulting loss of life or property damage squarely on the leaders of the plot, signaling a commitment to prosecute those involved.

ECOWAS further declared its readiness to provide comprehensive support to the Government and people of Benin, including the potential deployment of the ECOWAS Standby Force, to defend the country’s constitutional integrity and uphold its territorial sovereignty. This proactive stance underscores the bloc's commitment to safeguarding regional stability amidst a persistent trend of military takeovers in West Africa.

The ECOWAS reaction follows an attempted seizure of power by a group identifying itself as the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), which sought to remove President Patrice Talon from office and dissolve all state institutions on 7 December 2025.

The bloc’s statement serves to reinforce its dedication to democratic principles and regional security, emphasizing that the protection of constitutional order remains a paramount priority for West African nations, and those who subvert it will be held accountable.
