GOAL Sierra Leone recently hosted a formal inauguration ceremony at Tambakula Wharf to officially hand over the newly constructed "Ecowave Fish Market" to the Aberdeen community's fishmongers.

The event was characterized by significant community engagement and cultural demonstrations, highlighting the local enthusiasm for this infrastructure project, which is designed to modernize regional fisheries operations.

Historically, vendors at Tambakula Wharf faced substantial operational challenges due to inadequate sanitation and preservation facilities.

The Ecowave Fish Market was engineered to mitigate these issues through several key improvements:

  • Implementation of rigorous sanitary standards for seafood handling.

  • Provision of a secure, permanent structure for commercial activities.

  • Integration of facilities focused on reducing post-harvest losses and maintaining product freshness to enhance market value.

According to representatives from GOAL Sierra Leone, this initiative represents a strategic investment in the economic resilience of Freetown's coastal population. By equipping fishmongers—predominantly women—with modern resources, the project seeks to foster economic empowerment and stabilize the local economy.

Community leaders have lauded the collaborative efforts between international NGOs and local stakeholders. The Ecowave Fish Market serves as a benchmark for sustainable coastal development within Sierra Leone.

With the facility now operational, Aberdeen residents gain access to a reliable supply of hygienic seafood, while local traders benefit from a safer and more commercially viable environment.
