First Lady Fatima Maada Bio Addresses Rumours of Future Presidential Bid

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, has addressed growing public speculation about whether she intends to contest for the country’s presidency in the future, firmly stating that she is not driven by personal ambition for the office.

Speaking in an interview with BBC journalist Megha Mohan, the First Lady said leadership is ultimately determined by divine will rather than individual pursuit.

“Presidency does not come just like that. It will have to be the will of God… I’m not hungry for presidency,” she said.

Her comments come amid increasing public debate and media discussions suggesting her as a possible future presidential contender, a narrative that has gained traction in recent weeks.

However, Mrs. Bio said she is not focused on such speculation, insisting that her priority remains her current responsibilities.

“I am not worried about the negativity that is being spread,” she stated.

In the same interview, she reflected on her personal journey, including escaping child marriage at the age of 13 and later living as a refugee in London before returning to Sierra Leone.

Since becoming First Lady, she has taken on a more visible public role, advocating against child marriage, sexual and gender-based violence, and period poverty.

Mrs. Bio noted that public criticism and speculation are part of life in the spotlight, but said they do not deter her from her work.

“I’m not having a conversation to validate any of those things, whatever they said,” she added.

The interview has since generated mixed reactions online, with some praising her candour while others continue to debate her potential future in elective politics.

For now, the First Lady maintains that any political future remains a matter of faith and circumstance rather than personal ambition.
