Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) announced a noteworthy achievement for consumers this week, reporting that food inflation has reached a five-year low, alleviating economic pressure on households across the nation.
This encouraging development coincides with the June 2025 Consumer Price Index (CPI), which indicates a broader reduction in national inflation.
The annual inflation rate has decreased to 7.10%, representing a significant drop of 0.45 percentage points from May's figure of 7.55%.
Monthly inflation also declined, registering at -0.26%. This downward trend is largely attributed to a substantial reduction in the cost of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, which fell from 5.09% to 2.72% year-on-year.
Moreover, prices for alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics decreased by 1 percentage point.
While most sectors contributed to the overall moderation, upward pressures were noted in communication costs, which increased from 3.08% to 3.86%, and household equipment and maintenance, which rose from 11.41% to 12.27%.
Inflation rates declined across all five regions of Sierra Leone, with the Eastern region experiencing the most significant decrease from 3.98% to 3.82%. Stats SL attributes this continued moderation to stable market conditions and the sustained impact of policy measures implemented since the inflation peak in April 2025.
