Four men have been granted bail by Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah at Pademba Road Court No.1 in Freetown, facing charges of conspiracy and fraudulent conversion.
The charges stem from an alleged scheme to misappropriate over £20,000, part of a larger sum entrusted for delivery.
According to police records, between 2018 and 2020 in Freetown, the four accused — Abubakarr Barrie, Alimamy Kamara, Aruna Rashid Koroma, and Muctaru Kamara — allegedly conspired with unknown persons.
Specifically, it is alleged that Abubakarr Barrie fraudulently converted £20,300 (equivalent to Le 578,550) out of £33,300 (Le 949,050) that James Maitland entrusted to him for delivery to Pa Sidikie Koroma and the Koroma family. Barrie is accused of failing to deliver the money as agreed.
The charges read in court include conspiracy contrary to law and fraudulent conversion contrary to Section 20(1)(iv)(b) of the Larceny Act of 1916. No plea was entered as the matter is still at the preliminary stage.
Police investigations revealed a breach of trust and dishonest conversion, leading to the charges. The case has been adjourned to October 14, 2025.
