Government Initiates Nationwide Labour Inspection and Data Collection Exercise

The Government of Sierra Leone, via the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, has launched an extensive nationwide labour inspection and data collection initiative. Scheduled to span the entirety of July 2026, the exercise aims to fortify labour administration, enhance workplace safety, and refine the national employment database to better support policy development.

In a public notice released by the Ministry, it was confirmed that Labour and Occupational Health and Safety Inspectors have been mobilized across all regions. From 1 July to 31 July 2026, these teams will systematically visit business establishments and workplaces in both the public and private sectors to ensure comprehensive coverage.

The primary objectives of the mission include promoting strict adherence to national labour laws and occupational safety standards. Furthermore, the Ministry intends to generate reliable employment statistics, which are deemed critical for effective national planning and evidence-based policymaking.

During their site visits, inspectors are tasked with gathering detailed data on working conditions, social security registration, and general compliance with labour standards.

The Ministry noted that the process may involve workplace observations and brief interviews with personnel to gain a holistic view of current practices.

To facilitate this process, the Ministry has urged employers to cooperate fully with the inspection teams.

Providing accurate and relevant information is essential for the success of the exercise, which the government assures will be used strictly for official monitoring and the improvement of safety standards nationwide.
