Government Moves to Strengthen Startup Ecosystem and Support for Entrepreneurs
Sierra Leone is taking steps to strengthen support for entrepreneurs and growing businesses through efforts to improve the country’s startup ecosystem.
The Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation, in partnership with the International Trade Centre, the Ready Salone Project through the KOICA Nigeria Office, and Felei TechCity, has convened key stakeholders for a two-day Startup Ecosystem Policy Validation Workshop and Entrepreneurship Support Organisation Formalisation Consultation in Freetown.
The engagement brings together government representatives, entrepreneurs, investors, universities, private-sector stakeholders, development partners and organisations supporting businesses.
Discussions are focusing on key challenges facing startups, including access to finance, skills, markets, infrastructure and business support services.
The engagement follows findings from a national assessment of Sierra Leone’s startup ecosystem and is expected to contribute to the development of the country’s proposed Startup Act.
Participants are also discussing ways to better organise and coordinate entrepreneurship support organisations, including hubs, incubators and accelerators, through a proposed classification framework.
The two-day consultation will continue tomorrow, with stakeholders expected to develop practical recommendations aimed at creating a more supportive environment for entrepreneurs and strengthening assistance available to Sierra Leone’s growing businesses.
