Halle Harris Becomes First Sierra Leonean Commonwealth Games Semifinalist

Sierra Leonean swimmer Halle Harris has made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, becoming the first swimmer from her country to reach a semifinal at the prestigious multi-sport event. 

Competing in the women’s 50m backstroke on Monday, July 27, the 19-year-old finished fourth in her heat with a time of 29.07 seconds. This performance placed her 12th overall, successfully securing her spot among the top 16 swimmers advancing to the semifinal stage.

This milestone marks a significant breakthrough for the UK-based athlete, who is making her national team debut for Sierra Leone. Harris had already established herself as a top contender, currently holding the Sierra Leone national record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 29.37 seconds. 

Her versatility is a key asset; she is the first Sierra Leonean swimmer to represent the country across all five competitive categories, including freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly events.

Following a career-best performance at the Aquatics GB Championships, Harris’ success in Glasgow represents a landmark moment for Sierra Leone’s growing aquatics program, highlighting the potential of the nation's rising talent on the global stage and inspiring a new generation of athletes.
