Monica Kumba Kaiwandi, a housewife, has been denied bail and remanded to the female correctional center in Freetown following her appearance in court on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, facing charges of possessing a prohibited drug.
Kaiwandi appeared before Magistrate John Manso Fornah at Pademba Road Court No.2. She stands accused under Section 8(c) of the National Drug Control Act 2008 for allegedly possessing a controlled substance without lawful authority. She did not enter a plea when the charge was read.
Police prosecutors confirmed to the court that the accused was in police custody. Her defense lawyer, J. A. Conteh, sought bail on her behalf, emphasizing her Freetown residency and the availability of reliable sureties.
Conteh cited Section 23(4) of the National Constitution Act No.6 of 1991 and assured the court that Kaiwandi would not interfere with prosecution witnesses if released on bail.
However, Magistrate Fornah rejected the bail application, citing the serious nature of the alleged offense.
The case has been adjourned to September 1, 2025, for further proceedings.
