The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has formally acknowledged the economic progress of Sierra Leone. In response, President Julius Maada Bio has reiterated the administration’s steadfast commitment to the structural reforms outlined in the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

During a high-level consultation in Freetown, IMF Mission Chief Christian Saborowski emphasized notable improvements in macroeconomic stability. He observed that moderating inflation, reduced borrowing costs, and enhanced credit accessibility serve as concrete indicators of the efficacy of current reformatory measures.

President Bio affirmed that the government remains dedicated to fiscal discipline and the fortification of the nation’s economic infrastructure. He highlighted the successful stabilization of the exchange rate and the achievement of key programmatic benchmarks, noting that collaboration with the IMF has been instrumental in advancing national strategic priorities.

The President noted that disbursements under the programme, totaling approximately $89.8 million, have been pivotal in supporting budget execution. These funds have facilitated the delivery of essential public services while simultaneously underpinning the broader reform process.

He emphasized that sustained cooperation with the IMF is vital for bolstering investor confidence, securing additional capital inflows, and fostering enduring economic resilience and growth.

This engagement is a component of the ongoing evaluations under the ECF, as Sierra Leone endeavors to consolidate its economic gains and enhance institutional strength amidst a challenging global environment.

The IMF’s favorable assessment is expected to further validate the national reform agenda, supporting official efforts to harmonize fiscal consolidation with sustainable growth and social safety initiatives.
