Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, asserted during a press briefing at the Miatta Conference Centre that the government is unable to suspend taxes, citing Sierra Leone's current economic capacity.
Addressing public concerns over escalating transportation and fuel costs that have prompted calls for a temporary tax suspension, Minister Bah clarified that elevated operational costs do not warrant an automatic halt to revenue collection, emphasizing the dependence of essential public services on these funds.
Tax revenues are critical for supporting essential public expenditures, including school feeding programs, education subsidies, public sector wages, free healthcare services, and electricity provision.
While acknowledging the impact of the fuel price increase on citizens, the Minister affirmed that the government has enacted strategic measures to mitigate its effects, specifically mentioning a temporary two-week freeze on certain associated charges.
He stressed that sustained tax collection is imperative for the uninterrupted delivery of public services and maintaining the nation's fiscal stability.
These statements contribute to the ongoing national discourse regarding fuel prices and the cost of living, underscoring the policy challenges inherent in balancing public relief measures against the continuous need to fund essential government programs.
