Kailahun Unrest: 25 Suspects Arrested as Mob Violence Leads to Youth Death

Sierra Leone, a nation that endured a devastating 11-year civil war, finds itself at a critical juncture once again, as recent violent incidents threaten the fragile peace that has been painstakingly rebuilt over the past decades.  

On Sunday, June 21, 2026, Kailahun Town was rocked by a tragic event that culminated in the death of Abdulai Kallon, a young bike rider from Daru. According to a statement from the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the incident began when officers responded to a distress call about unknown persons entering a residence.  

Although the suspect had left the scene, he was later apprehended by a crowd that had beaten him mercilessly, leading to his untimely death en route to the police station.  

The police report indicates that so far, 25 suspects have been arrested in connection with the unrest and acts of arson that followed. The authorities continue their investigations, emphasizing their commitment to justice and transparency.  

The tragic events sparked widespread anger, with misinformation spreading rapidly and fueling clashes among youths and the bike rider community. In the chaos, several police facilities and properties were torched, further destabilizing the area.  

As calm is gradually being restored, the Sierra Leone Police reaffirm their dedication to maintaining peace and order. The police also confirmed that Abdulai Kallon’s death was a result of mob violence, and they continue to work diligently to identify those responsible for the unrest.  

The government and security agencies are calling on all Sierra Leoneans to support the ongoing investigations, exercise restraint, and work towards national unity.
