The wife of Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Mrs. Kate Krontiris-Sengeh, visited Kailahun this week, engaging community leaders, women’s groups, youth representatives, and traditional authorities in discussions aimed at strengthening grassroots leadership, civic participation, and women’s empowerment.
During her two-day visit, Mrs. Krontiris-Sengeh emphasized that effective leadership begins with listening, inclusion, and collaboration. “It is always encouraging to see leaders committed to community engagement and empowerment,” she said, highlighting the importance of connecting with communities, supporting education, and uplifting women’s groups.
The engagement, hosted by former Member of Parliament Hon. Navo Kaikai, brought together a diverse group of participants including councillors, mammy queens, traders, students, midwives, youth trainers, and media practitioners. Rather than delivering formal lectures, Mrs. Krontiris-Sengeh facilitated interactive dialogues, encouraging participants to reflect on their own leadership experiences and the challenges they face in daily community work.
A symbolic moment at the start of the event set the tone for practical community engagement: Hon. Navo Kaikai, a trained health professional, conducted blood pressure checks for attendees, underscoring that leadership begins with attention to everyday wellbeing.
Mrs. Krontiris-Sengeh also visited Kai2 Primary School and interacted with pupils, teachers, and community members, reinforcing her message that strong communities are built through empathy, respect, and collective responsibility.
A central theme of the visit was women’s empowerment. Participants shared experiences in community leadership, healthcare, education, and governance. Observers noted that seeing women actively shape leadership discussions sends a powerful message to young girls about their potential societal roles.
Mrs. Krontiris-Sengeh, widely recognized for her civic and cultural work, is the co-founder of Telem Uncommon Sounds, a creative initiative supporting emerging artists, and serves as co-chair of the advisory council guiding the transformation of the Miatta Conference Centre into the Miatta Civic Centre, envisioned as a national hub for civic dialogue, creativity, and public engagement.
Her visit complements the work of her husband, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, whose role focuses on policy implementation and government coordination under President Julius Maada Bio. Together, their partnership exemplifies a modern approach to leadership, blending government policy with grassroots civic engagement to foster trust, participation, and national development.
Community leaders praised Mrs. Krontiris-Sengeh’s visit, noting that it provided inspiration, practical lessons, and a renewed sense of collaboration. “We look forward to the positive impact this engagement will bring to Kailahun,” they said, emphasizing that initiatives like these strengthen communities through leadership, education, and partnership.
Mrs. Krontiris-Sengeh concluded her visit by reiterating that the strength of a nation lies in the strength of its communities and that leadership often begins with the simple act of listening.
