Kenema Magistrate Sentences for Gun Possession and Domestic Violence

His Worship, Magistrate Brima S. Samai of Magistrate Court No. 2 in Kenema, delivered judgments on two separate criminal cases on April 28, 2026.
Unlawful Possession of a Small Arm
The court sentenced Lahai Bawoh, a farmer from Panguma Town, for the unlawful possession of a small arm without authority. This offense is contrary to Section 19 subsection 2 (a) of Act No. 14 of 1955, as repealed and replaced by Section 10 of Act No. 7 of 1972.
Court Registrar Emmanuel Cooper read the charges, detailing that on April 21, 2026, at the Ngielima Police Checkpoint in Ngielima village, Lower Bambara Chiefdom, Kenema Judicial District, Mr. Bawoh was found to be in unauthorized possession of a short gun (Pistol). He was sentenced to twelve (12) months imprisonment or the payment of the sum claimed in the file.
Domestic Violence Conviction
In a separate matter, Mohamed Abdul Mansaray, a businessman residing at Burma 3 Section in Kenema, was arraigned before Magistrate Samai on three counts of Domestic Violence under the Domestic Violence Act No. 20 of 2007.
The charges included:
Domestic violence contrary to Section 2 subsection 1 (a), stemming from a physical assault on April 14, 2026, against his wife, Mojama Sheriff.
Two counts of Domestic Violence contrary to Section 2 subsection 1 (c), resulting from Mr. Mansaray intentionally inducing fear in Ms. Sheriff by threatening to kill her, and emotionally abusing her by making her feel constantly unhappy, stressed, degraded, or worthless.
Mr. Mansaray entered a guilty plea on Count 1, but pleaded not guilty on Counts 2 and 3. Following the proceedings, he was found guilty by the court and sentenced to twenty-four (24) months imprisonment at the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre (SLCC) in Kenema, or the payment of the sum claimed in the file.
The matters were prosecuted by Police Inspector Aiah Mafinda Teh and Woman Police Constable 18818 Samai F. Fatima.
