LAJ, Emmerson and Famous Emerge as Sierra Leone’s Most Popular Musicians in New Survey

A comprehensive survey conducted by Meraki Analytics has identified LAJ, Emmerson and Famous as Sierra Leone’s most popular musicians, offering fresh insight into the country’s evolving music landscape and the preferences of different generations of listeners.

The study, which surveyed 1,217 residents across Freetown between April 13 and May 4, examined public perceptions of Sierra Leonean artists and highlighted notable trends influenced by age and gender demographics.

According to the findings, hip-hop star LAJ emerged as the nation’s top favourite musician, securing 12.3 percent of total responses. The survey found that his popularity was particularly strong among Generation Z respondents, underscoring his significant influence on contemporary youth culture and the local music scene.

Veteran musician Emmerson followed closely in second place with 10.5 percent of the vote. Widely known for his socially conscious lyrics and politically themed songs, Emmerson received strong support from Millennial respondents, many of whom have followed his music throughout their formative years.

Completing the top three was Famous, who garnered 8.4 percent of responses. The survey revealed that the artist enjoys particularly strong support among female listeners, a trend attributed to the popularity of his melodic and romantic style of music.

Meraki Analytics noted that the three artists collectively represent distinct dimensions of Sierra Leone’s music industry. While LAJ is celebrated for his energetic street-inspired sound, Emmerson is recognised for his social commentary and advocacy through music, and Famous has built a loyal following with his contemporary pop and love-themed songs.

The findings highlight the continued importance of music as a form of cultural expression and identity among Sierra Leoneans, particularly in Freetown, where generational and demographic differences continue to shape listening preferences.

According to the survey, the popularity of these artists reflects the diversity of Sierra Leone’s music scene and demonstrates how different generations connect with music that resonates with their experiences, values and aspirations.
