The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has issued a firm reminder to Members of Parliament that plenary sessions commence at exactly 10:00 AM, warning that persistent lateness may lead to restrictions on certain parliamentary privileges.
Addressing lawmakers during a recent sitting, Speaker Thomas commended MPs who consistently arrive on time, describing their conduct as a mark of “exemplary dedication.” He stressed that punctuality is crucial not only for the effective conduct of parliamentary business but also for upholding public confidence in the institution.
“When we start on time, we send a clear message that the work of the people matters,” he said. “This is not about blame, but about ensuring that every voice is present when decisions that affect the nation are made.”
To reinforce discipline, the Speaker announced that he will begin publicly naming MPs who are absent from their seats when proceedings commence. He noted that the measure is intended to encourage responsibility and ensure full participation in debates and decision-making.
The caution comes as Parliament enters a demanding legislative period, with key bills, oversight engagements, and budget considerations scheduled. Speaker Thomas’s renewed emphasis on punctuality is expected to improve the efficiency and credibility of parliamentary proceedings in the months ahead.
