Leone Stars Hold Strategic Meeting Ahead of Key AFCON Qualifier
Sierra Leone’s senior men’s national football team, the Leone Stars, convened an essential strategic meeting in Morocco following their inaugural official training session on Tuesday, as final preparations get underway for Thursday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Zimbabwe.
The Group E fixture, set to take place on Thursday, September 24 in El Jadida, marks the opening match of Sierra Leone’s qualification campaign for the 2027 AFCON tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the fixture as part of the official Matchday 1 group stage schedule.
This clash represents a significant milestone, as it will be the first-ever senior international encounter between Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe’s Warriors. With no prior head-to-head records between the two nations at the senior men's level, Thursday’s competitive showdown marks an unprecedented chapter in both countries' footballing histories.
The match also serves as the competitive debut for Head Coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa, who took charge of the team in June. The experienced French tactician has been entrusted with guiding the West African nation toward securing its fourth AFCON appearance.
Addressing the squad during the meeting, Da Rosa called for absolute focus, squad unity, and shared responsibility as they prepare to take on a determined Zimbabwean side launching their own continental push.
Team Manager Abdul Karim Bangura reiterated the broader significance of the fixture, urging players to embrace their roles as national ambassadors and uphold the dignity of the shirt throughout the campaign.
Squad leadership also took center stage, with Captain Osman Kakay emphasizing discipline, tactical execution, and collective resilience. Following Kakay's remarks, the team conducted a video review analyzing Zimbabwe's playstyle and tactical setup.
Senior defender Sallieu Tarawallie added his voice to the squad briefing, calling on his teammates to remain mentally tough and unwaveringly committed to securing a positive result in the opener.
