In a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 Mano River Union (MRU) U-20 Women’s Tournament, Liberia’s U-20 Women’s National Team, the ‘Young Lone Star’, defeated hosts Sierra Leone 2-1 in a nail-biting final at the Southern Arena.
The victory crowns Liberia as regional champions, capping off a tightly contested competition that highlighted the rising potential of women’s football in the Mano River Union region.
The final was a rematch of two sides that had battled fiercely throughout the tournament, which featured Liberia and Sierra Leone after Guinea withdrew. Both previous encounters ended in 2-2 draws, signaling that the championship match would be a high-stakes affair.
The Liberian side, renowned for resilience and late-game comebacks, showcased tactical discipline and consistency, breaking the deadlock against the home team. Despite strong support from the home crowd, the Sierra Leonean ‘Sierra Queens’ were unable to withstand Liberia’s attack and solid defense, which capitalized on key opportunities to secure the title.

Liberia’s championship was cemented by their superior standing in the round-robin format, powered by their decisive final-day victory. After registering three draws in four matches leading up to the final, the 2-1 win over Sierra Leone proved pivotal in propelling the Young Lone Star to the top of the standings.
The triumph not only gives Liberia the MRU U-20 Women’s crown but also underscores the growing competitiveness and talent emerging in women’s football across the region.
