Justice Alfred Ganda of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced Robert Moiforay to one year in prison after he admitted stealing a Techno Smart mobile phone and an analogue phone valued at NLe3,000. The sentence takes into account the three months he has already spent on remand.
In his ruling, Justice Ganda noted that the accused’s guilty plea, remorse, and first-offender status were mitigating factors, though no evidence was presented to prove the stolen phones were returned.
Defense lawyer C. Taylor-Young pleaded for leniency, while prosecutor Yusuf Isaac Sesay outlined how Moiforay, tasked with fetching water for the complainant, took advantage of an open room to steal the phones. He later gave them to a driver known as Alias Bluff Man at Falcon Bridge, but efforts to recover the items failed.
Although Moiforay claimed the phones were later returned, the prosecution said there was no evidence to support this.
Justice Ganda stressed that sentencing could have ranged from one to fourteen years given the gravity of the offence. The case was one of 75 matters listed for the September 2025 criminal session presided over by Chief Justice Komba Kamanda.
