The Minister of Communication and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, forged a strong connection with the nation's music community this week, revealing a personal history with the industry as he pledged a close partnership with the Sierra Leone DJs Union (SLeDU) on critical national development and communication initiatives.
Minister Bah’s commitment came during a familiarization meeting with the Union's leadership on Tuesday, December 2nd, at his office in Youyi Building, Brookfield.
Emphasizing the vital role disc jockeys play in the dissemination of information, the Minister offered a compelling personal reason for his dedication: "I know the importance of DJs because my father was a DJ in the eastern part of Freetown. He loved playing music, so I will not forget to include DJs in all our activities."
He elaborated that such a meeting with the DJs union had long been a personal aspiration. He also acknowledged a current communication hurdle affecting one of the Ministry’s key projects, "SALONE BIG PASS WE ALL," which features multiple Sierra Leonean artists. He noted that the songs were struggling to achieve sufficient airplay because proper engagement with the DJs had been overlooked.
"I believe we are going to work together on all the projects the union wants to embark on moving forward," he affirmed to the SLeDU delegation.
Speaking on behalf of the Union, President Ibrahim Koroma, known as Prezo Koroma, began by commending the Minister’s efforts in simplifying government communication for the public. He then underscored the imperative need for the direct involvement of DJs during the Ministry’s weekly press conferences.
"Mr. Minister, we have DJs across the country, and if your Ministry works with us, we can achieve the big picture, which is information dissemination," Prezo Koroma stated.
He further highlighted the Union's observation that while the Ministry had undertaken numerous past projects, SLeDU had yet to see significant or sustained participation. The Union is now eagerly anticipating a new, collaborative era of partnership under Minister Bah's leadership.
