Minority Leader Questions Government's Capacity for Masiaka Military Project

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has voiced reservations regarding the proposed Masiaka military facility, questioning the government's capacity to deliver the ambitious project as stipulated.

In a recent communication, Hon. Kargbo acknowledged the presentation of architectural renderings for the facility, which include modern barracks and a stadium. However, he advised prudence, citing historical precedents of announced high-profile projects, such as the Lungi Bridge and the international conference center in Lungi, which remain incomplete.

“While long-term strategic planning is commendable, appealing visual representations do not consistently materialize into finalized projects,” he stated. “It is therefore pertinent to question the prioritization of a new military facility with a stadium when the rehabilitation of the national stadium has been protracted for years, compelling the national team to host home matches in Liberia. Prudent policy demands realistic forecasting, fiscal rigor, and demonstrable outcomes.”

Hon. Kargbo underscored the necessity of continuing to evaluate Juba Barracks, a key military installation in Freetown, within the framework of national security imperatives. He contended that any proposed redevelopment or relocation, including the move to Masiaka, must be rigorously assessed against long-term defense requirements, not merely short-term commercial viability.

Furthermore, he highlighted systemic concerns regarding military infrastructure nationwide, noting that existing facilities like Lungi Barracks suffer from dilapidated conditions, inadequate water supply, sanitation, and substandard accommodation. Kargbo emphasized that modernization efforts should be concentrated on sustainable improvements and the accountable stewardship of public assets.

The Opposition Leader called for enhanced transparency in planning and oversight, urging the government to ensure that public commitments are translated into tangible results, and that national security remains the paramount consideration in all decisions concerning military infrastructure.
