The Dental Unit at the Kenema Government Hospital has undergone major improvements, restoring its capacity to provide comprehensive dental services to patients in the district.

The unit, which was once regarded as a centre of excellence in dental care, had in recent years experienced a decline in patient visits due to technical challenges. However, according to the District Dental Officer, Momoh Sultan, the facility has now been transformed into a modern dental unit equipped to handle a wide range of treatments.

Speaking during a visit to the unit, Sultan said patients no longer need to be referred to other health facilities for most dental conditions, as the unit is now capable of providing services including tooth replacement using dental implants and prosthetics, tooth extraction, restorative procedures such as crowns, bridges and dentures, as well as preventive care like routine cleanings and fluoride treatments.

He added that the unit also addresses oral hygiene and cosmetic dental concerns, including the treatment of halitosis and other oral health conditions, aimed at improving overall dental health among patients.

While commending the government for its support in rehabilitating the dental unit, Sultan noted that there is still a need for additional advanced dental equipment to further improve efficiency and service delivery.

“The unit requires more modern tools and technologies to enable us provide even better care to the community,” he said.

Sultan encouraged members of the public to make use of the facility and seek early dental care to prevent complications.

The revitalised dental unit is expected to improve access to quality dental services in Kenema District and reduce the need for referrals to health facilities outside the region.
