National Athletes Set to Compete at Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia Amid Budget Constraints

Sierra Leone has officially marked its presence at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, currently taking place in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The first delegation departed Freetown on Wednesday, 5th November 2025, led by the Chef de Mission and including Para-Powerlifting star Ms. Rugiatu Sankoh, her coach, and Mr. Unisa Deen Kargbo, a representative of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Association (ISSA) attending the ISSA General Assembly.

The second delegation, comprising one Judo athlete and one Swimmer, is set to arrive in Riyadh on November 7, 2025, while the final group consisting of an Athletics and a Wrestling competitor will depart Freetown on November 13, 2025.

Although 45 athletes across 11 sporting disciplines qualified for the Games, budgetary constraints meant that only five athletes, accompanied by two coaches and the Chef de Mission, could travel to represent Sierra Leone on the international stage.

The National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOCSLE) has played a pivotal role in facilitating the country’s participation, reflecting its ongoing commitment to promoting sports and fostering international representation.

As Sierra Leone’s athletes and officials carry the Green, White, and Blue in Riyadh, fans at home are encouraged to cheer them on as they showcase resilience, talent, and true sportsmanship.
