The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued an urgent alert in response to forecasts predicting heavy rainfall across Sierra Leone from July 30 to August 2, 2025. This warning comes as data from the African Union’s Climate Centre (ACMAD/OCHA) and the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet) indicate that cumulative rainfall could reach between 100mm and 150mm over the coming days.
The anticipated deluge raises concerns about flash floods, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage, especially in areas identified as high-risk. The NDMA has highlighted that low-lying coastal regions, hillside communities, and urban areas with inadequate drainage systems are particularly vulnerable. Regions already saturated from previous rains face an even greater threat.
To mitigate potential loss of life and property, the NDMA recommends several precautions for residents:
Relocate Temporarily: Those living in flood-prone areas should seek temporary shelter in safer locations during the rainfall.
Clear Gutters and Waterways: Residents are advised to remove debris from drainage systems to prevent blockages and worsening flooding.
Report Emergencies: For immediate assistance, the public can reach the NDMA’s toll-free emergency line at 1199.
The NDMA emphasized that this is a proactive warning, stating that they are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any emergencies.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and stay updated through reliable sources during this period of heightened weather risk.
