The National Election Watch (NEW) has officially concluded its district-level elections across Sierra Leone, marking a significant milestone in civic engagement. Conducted from March 2 to March 24, 2026, the electoral process saw substantial participation from member organizations across all 17 operational districts.

In a robust display of internal democracy, the elections recorded an impressive turnout of 88.9%. According to official registry data, 442 out of 497 registered organizations participated in the process. This high level of involvement underscores the commitment of civil society to maintaining a structured and representative leadership within the nation's premier election observation body.

A notable highlight of this electoral cycle was the strategic decision to divide Bonthe District into two separate voting zones. This adjustment addressed the logistical challenges posed by the district's difficult riverine terrain, ensuring that geography did not hinder democratic participation.

"Our primary objective was inclusivity," stated a NEW representative. "By accounting for the unique landscape of Bonthe, we guaranteed that every registered organization had a fair and accessible opportunity to cast their vote."

The successful conclusion of these elections has resulted in the appointment of new District Teams, including Coordinators and Secretaries. These officials are now tasked with overseeing election monitoring and civic education at the local level. With this leadership firmly established, NEW is well-positioned to advance its national mandate, supported by a renewed sense of legitimacy and a clear mandate from its diverse membership base.
