NYAF-SL Strengthens Teachers’ Capacity in 21 Primary Schools in Pujehun

The National Youth Awareness Forum Sierra Leone (NYAF-SL) has concluded a training programme for head teachers and upper-class teachers in Pujehun District, aimed at improving literacy and numeracy skills among pupils in 21 primary schools across Soro Gbeima, Makpele, Kabondeh and Sowa Chiefdoms.
The training, which took place at the District Council Conference Hall in Pujehun Town, brought together 21 head teachers, representatives of the Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and other education stakeholders.
Speaking to Sarah Kallay Blog, NYAF-SL Executive Director, Victor Lansana Koroma Esq., said the training was designed to strengthen teachers' capacity to deliver effective classroom instruction and improve pupils' learning outcomes, particularly in reading, writing and basic mathematics.
He said the initiative highlights the importance of strengthening teachers' professional capacity as a key strategy for addressing learning challenges and improving the quality of education across the district.
During his PowerPoint presentation, Emmanuel Margai, a Free Quality Assurance Officer at MBSSE in Pujehun District, encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the training to improve their teaching methods, promote effective classroom practices and support pupils experiencing difficulties in literacy and numeracy.
Bockarie Kallon, Head Teacher of Pujehun District Council Primary School in Fairo, expressed appreciation to NYAF-SL for organising the training.
He noted that involving head teachers and upper-class teachers was expected to promote better supervision, collaboration and the sharing of effective teaching practices among participating schools.
Kallon further emphasised that literacy and numeracy are fundamental to children's educational development, providing the foundation for academic achievement and lifelong learning. He stressed that strengthening these competencies at the primary school level is essential to equipping pupils with the skills needed to progress through the education system.
The training forms part of efforts to support teachers in delivering quality education and improving learning outcomes for schoolchildren across Pujehun District.
