Protection International has concluded a monitoring exercise on Green Scenery Sierra Leone under the Strengthening Legal Literacy and Collective Protection for Environmental Rights Defenders in Sierra Leone Project in Malen Chiefdom, Pujehun District.

According to Ahmed Tejan Bashir, Project Manager at Green Scenery, the exercise assessed project implementation, reviewed progress, and identified challenges affecting efforts to protect environmental rights defenders.

He explained that the project focuses on improving legal literacy, strengthening collective protection mechanisms, and equipping environmental rights defenders with the knowledge and skills to understand their rights and address environmental and human rights challenges.

Sylvain Youdom, Finance and Grant Officer at Protection International, noted that Malen Chiefdom remains a significant area of engagement on land rights and environmental concerns. He said the monitoring exercise also provided an opportunity to identify areas requiring further support, improve implementation, and strengthen collaboration between project partners and local communities.

The project is expected to build the capacity of environmental rights defenders, increase awareness of legal rights, and promote collective approaches to addressing threats faced by environmental justice advocates.

The conclusion of the exercise marks a step towards tracking project progress and strengthening the protection of environmental rights defenders in Malen Chiefdom and beyond.
