World Food Day: Fisheries Minister Highlights Initiatives to Boost Food Production

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, has reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening food security through sustainable fisheries management and increased fish production.
She made the statement during this year’s World Food Day celebrations at Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology in Magburaka, Tonkolili District, held under the theme, “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow.”
Minister Dugba said the ministry was working to increase fish production, improve revenue generation and create an enabling environment for fishing communities across the country.
She highlighted ongoing projects, including the construction of the Chinese-funded fish harbour at Black Johnson in Freetown, as well as initiatives aimed at developing inland fisheries and aquaculture.
On sustainable fisheries management, the minister outlined measures being implemented to protect Sierra Leone’s marine resources. These include legal frameworks, a quota management system and closed fishing seasons designed to prevent overfishing and preserve fish stocks.
The celebrations also featured an exhibition of fisheries and marine products, alongside modern technologies used in the sector, highlighting efforts to boost food production and improve livelihoods.
In his keynote address, President Julius Maada Bio acknowledged progress in food production and commended stakeholders, including the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, for their contributions to national development.
He also reaffirmed his government’s support for the Feed Salone initiative, which seeks to strengthen domestic food production and improve food security.
The event brought together government officials, development partners and representatives of international non-governmental organisations to discuss strategies for advancing food security and agricultural development in Sierra Leone.
