The ‘School Boys’ of Old Edwardians and Star Sport Academy played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on Wednesday, 27 May at the Sierra Leone Football Association Academy.
Old Edwardians controlled much of the first-half proceedings, pressing high and creating sustained attacking pressure in the opening 45 minutes. Despite their dominance, Star Sport Academy striker Larry Siemon had two early chances to give the hosts the lead but failed to convert, as the visitors remained compact defensively.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when James Jusu Kanga outmuscled Star Sport Academy defender Mamady Kone inside the box and was brought down, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Kanga stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give Old Edwardians a 1-0 lead. The goal took his tally to 12 for the season, keeping him as the league’s current top scorer.
After the interval, tactical adjustments from head coach Amidu Karim shifted the momentum in favour of the home side. Star Sport Academy increased their intensity, pushing higher up the pitch and pinning Old Edwardians back in search of an equaliser.
Their pressure eventually paid off in the 65th minute when Osman Kamara found the back of the net to level the score and revive hopes for the home team.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages of the match, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the game ended in a stalemate.
The result leaves Star Sport Academy disappointed after missing the opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Bo Rangers. For Old Edwardians, however, the point keeps them in contention as they continue their push to overtake Star Sport Academy for second place on the table.
