The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has warned that high mobile data prices are depriving citizens of access to education, innovation, and opportunities, while widening the gap between the rich and the poor.
Speaking during a parliamentary hearing on Thursday, October 9, 2025, Hon. Kargbo underscored the importance of affordable internet access in the digital era, noting that data costs directly affect students and low-income citizens who rely on online platforms for learning, research, and participation in the digital economy.
He criticized mobile network operators for increasing tariffs instead of expanding network capacity, arguing that the move has left many Sierra Leoneans unable to access essential digital services. According to him, the decision effectively excludes those who cannot afford higher rates, limiting opportunities for education and innovation.
Officials from the Ministry of Communications, the National Telecommunications Authority (NatCA), and mobile network operators appeared before Parliament on October 9, 2025, to explain the recent data price hikes.
The cost of a one-week unlimited data bundle was recently raised from Le 60 to Le 100, sparking public concern. In response, Parliament issued a 24-hour ultimatum directing the operators to reverse the price increase to ensure data remains affordable and accessible to all citizens.
Hon. Kargbo emphasized that affordable data is crucial for national development, stressing that access to information, education, and innovation must remain inclusive. He warned that if left unaddressed, rising data costs would deepen inequalities and continue to marginalize those who cannot afford digital access.
