President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Osman I. Kanu, Esq., as the new Solicitor General of Sierra Leone, replacing Robert Kowa. This significant change in legal administration was confirmed via a public notice from the State House.

The appointment is effective immediately and is subject to parliamentary approval where necessary, as indicated in a statement from the State House. Mr. Kanu, who previously served as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), will assume the role of principal assistant to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

In his new capacity, Mr. Kanu will be central to government legal operations. His responsibilities will include overseeing key aspects of the state’s legal and administrative functions, such as coordinating prosecutions, handling civil matters, and providing advisory services to the state.

The Office of the Solicitor General is an integral part of the Attorney General’s Chambers and represents one of the most senior legal offices in Sierra Leone’s justice system, serving as the primary support to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

This transition from prosecution leadership to a top administrative legal office is anticipated to draw attention from the legal community. The appointment of Osman I. Kanu signifies a notable shift in Sierra Leone’s justice sector leadership, aligning with the government's ongoing efforts to reinforce its legal and institutional frameworks.
