Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has revealed that more than 200 bodies have been found on the streets of Freetown, a disturbing trend she attributes to the growing abuse of the drug Kush.
Speaking on several media platforms, the Mayor disclosed that her recent letter to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. AIG (Rtd) Morie Lengor Esq., highlights a worrying increase in corpses discovered across the city.
According to her, the Freetown City Council has traditionally handled pauper’s burials for destitute individuals who die in public places. However, since 2022, the number of such cases has risen sharply shifting from rare incidents to what she described as “a near-daily occurrence.”
Last week, residents in central Freetown were confronted with another grim discovery when the body of an unidentified young man was found near Connaught Hospital, along Lightfoot Boston Street close to Percival Street Junction.
Eyewitnesses described the deceased as physically disabled and a long-time beggar who often sat by the hospital fence.
“He was always sitting quietly by the fence,” said a nearby trader. “He never disturbed anyone, but none of us knew his name or where he came from. Now he’s gone, and still nobody knows who he was.”
