Professor Kargbo Confirmed as New TEC Chairman

Parliament has approved Professor John Abdul Kargbo as Chairman of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), following his appointment on September 8, 2026.

His approval followed parliamentary scrutiny, clearing the way for him to lead the statutory body responsible for regulating tertiary education institutions across Sierra Leone.

Prof. Kargbo brings extensive experience in academia and library and information science. He is recognised for his work in developing the library and information system at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and has published more than 50 academic papers in the field.

His areas of expertise include records management, library education and information services.

During his appearance before Parliament’s appointment committee, he outlined his plans to address malpractice in the education sector. He pledged to work with the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, tertiary institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen regulatory oversight and tackle educational malpractice.

His appointment comes at a time when academic standards, institutional accountability and the regulation of tertiary education remain important issues within the sector.

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, congratulated Prof. Kargbo and other newly approved appointees, urging them to discharge their responsibilities with dedication and integrity.

He reminded the appointees that public office is held for a limited period and encouraged them to use their time in office to make meaningful contributions and leave a positive legacy.

Prof. Kargbo is expected to lead the Commission in strengthening oversight of tertiary education standards and ensuring institutional compliance across Sierra Leone.
