Parliamentary Sports Committee Reviews Stadium Rehabilitation Progress

A parliamentary delegation led by the Committee on Sports inspected the ongoing rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens National Stadium on June 25, 2026, to assess project milestones as the facility nears completion.

Accompanied by officials from the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Sports, Committee Chairperson Hon. Racheal Mariatu Sesay Pessima emphasized that the stadium serves as a critical symbol of national pride. The tour, which included briefings from the project's contractors, aimed to ensure the facility meets international standards for future competitions.

Engineers confirmed that Phase One of the rehabilitation is complete, with an official handover scheduled for June 30, 2026. The upgraded facility features a new natural grass pitch, modern floodlights, renovated dressing rooms, an improved spectator stand, and a new tartan athletics track.

NSA Executive Director Mohamed Alphaka Conteh noted that completing the stadium is vital for Sierra Leone's ability to host international matches domestically, which would mitigate the financial costs of playing abroad. 

During the visit, ministry officials urged contractors to prioritize inclusive infrastructure, specifically highlighting accessibility for persons with disabilities, improved tunnel ventilation, and dedicated facilities for female athletes.

The committee concluded the inspection by stressing the necessity for continued transparency and stakeholder collaboration to ensure the project meets the rigorous certification requirements of CAF and FIFA.
