PICOT Empowers Kpanga Leaders for Peaceful Land Governance
In a transformative step toward sustainable land management and local peacebuilding, the Partners Initiative for Conflict Transformation (PICOT), supported by the Land for Life Initiative, hosted an intensive one-day capacity-building workshop for the Kpanga Chiefdom Land Committee at the Kpanga Court Barray.
The landmark session brought together key local stakeholders, including committee members nominated across all nine sections of the chiefdom, alongside Paramount Chief Andrew Ibrahim Jaiah Kaikai. Paramount Chief Kaikai warmly welcomed the initiative, expressing deep appreciation to PICOT for championing transparent governance and bolstering institutional capacity within his chiefdom.
Designed to equip leaders with modern tools for equitable administration, the training focused on expanding expertise in land governance, conflict resolution, and accountable community management. Participants dived deep into crucial legal and operational frameworks, including the Customary Land Rights Act, the core mandate of the Chiefdom Land Committee, the operation of the Chiefdom Land Registry, and structured grievance redress mechanisms.
Leading the facilitation, PICOT District Director Maxwell Kemokai emphasized practical accountability. He highlighted the essential role of standardized documentation—specifically the Grievance Complaint Form and Dispute Resolution Log—in transparently tracking and resolving local land disputes.
In addition to dispute management, committee members received hands-on orientation on maintaining essential record-keeping tools, such as the Land Transactions Register and Communal Land Register. The interactive session also covered best practices for formal meeting procedures, agenda development, and fulfilling quarterly reporting mandates to the District Land Commission.
To ensure lasting impact and real-time collaboration, the workshop concluded with the launch of a dedicated WhatsApp communication network, connecting committee members for seamless coordination and swift information sharing across sections.
By equipping local leaders with stronger technical knowledge and digital communication channels, this initiative marks a pivotal step forward in fostering peaceful, transparent, and sustainable land management throughout Kpanga Chiefdom.
