Residents Demand Urgent Government Action for Fairo–Sulima Road Repairs
Residents across Soro Gbeima Chiefdom in Pujehun District are making an urgent appeal to the Government of Sierra Leone and local authorities to rehabilitate the vital road linking Fairo to Sulima. Community members describe the current condition of the thoroughfare as severely deplorable, posing critical daily challenges to movement, commerce, and safety.
According to Maxwell V. Kemokai, a native of the chiefdom, the road network has deteriorated drastically. Key stretches have become nearly impassable, a situation that worsens dramatically during the rainy season and restricts the flow of vehicles, essential goods, and commuters.
The road serves as a primary trade corridor for agrarian communities. Kemokai emphasized that local farmers and traders rely heavily on this route to transport fresh agricultural produce to major district markets. Without reliable passage, farm produce risks spoiling before reaching buyers, threatening local livelihoods.
Chief Siaka L. Massaquoi, Town Chief of Sulima, voiced deep concern over the cascading effects of the road's decay. He stated that transport fares have skyrocketed while access to critical social infrastructure—including emergency medical facilities and schools—has become increasingly precarious.
Motorists operating along the route face significant delays as they navigate extensive deep potholes, heavy mud, and washed-out sections. Community leaders warn that without immediate repairs, continued deterioration could leave remote towns completely isolated.
In light of these growing hardships, the residents of Soro Gbeima are calling directly upon national road authorities, the Pujehun District Council, and international development partners to prioritize a comprehensive overhaul of the Fairo–Sulima road.
Community stakeholders maintain that a durable, well-paved road network will unlock the economic potential of the chiefdom, restore smooth transportation for agricultural goods, enhance access to healthcare and education, and strengthen regional connectivity across Pujehun District.
