Police ban night operations at wharves to prevent the commission of crimes

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) issued a press release on August 29, 2023, expressing concern about the operation of boats and canoes at wharves across the country at night. The press release stated: “The Sierra Leone (SLP) is concerned that locally made boats and canoes operate and berth at wharves across the country at night in the guise of involving in either transportation and fishing activities”

After meeting with various stakeholders to examine the threats posed by these operations, the meeting concluded that credible intelligence received indicates that unscrupulous people have plans to exploit the current situation to their advantage by using these wharves at night to carry out clandestine activities.

In light of the security threats posed, the SLP has announced the following measures:

  • Effective Friday, September 1, 2023, all boats are banned from using, berthing or anchoring at any wharf across the country after 7pm.

  • The SLP, working with other ministries, departments and agencies, will intensify monitoring and security checks at all wharves across the country.

The SLP urges the public to cooperate with the security forces in enforcing these measures and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
