Police Wives President Concludes Nationwide Engagement Tour

Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu, President of the Police Wives Association (PWA), has successfully concluded a comprehensive nationwide tour of police barracks, encompassing provincial locations and the Western Area, including Police Headquarters in Kingtom. The tour, conducted from February 9 to 20, 2026, aimed to brief police personnel and their spouses on the developmental achievements realised under her leadership since she took office in 2022.

During the engagements, Mrs. Sellu facilitated interactive sessions with police wives and officers, emphasising strategies for strengthening and repositioning the Association for enhanced impact. She explained that initial visits to barracks nationwide established a platform for open dialogue, which led to the identification of several key challenges. These challenges included the lack of reliable drinking water, inadequate sanitation facilities, and the need for microcredit support for police wives.

According to Mrs. Sellu, police wives unanimously endorsed initiating social fundraising activities to address these persistent concerns. The proceeds from these initiatives have since financed the construction of solar-powered boreholes in ten police barracks across Freetown and the provinces. Further interventions include the construction of toilet and wash facilities at the Kingtom Police Barracks, the disbursement of microcredit loans to police wives in eleven barracks, and the introduction of technical and vocational training programmes for ten beneficiaries.

Mrs. Sellu further reported that a recent fundraising event at Sugar Land Beach yielded Le375,000 after the deduction of expenses. However, she noted that due to increased participation from barracks nationwide, this amount was insufficient for equitable loan disbursement. Consequently, the Association’s executive members and regional representatives resolved to organise another fundraising activity to augment the fund—a principal objective of the provincial tour.

Police officers across various barracks and divisions expressed their appreciation for Mrs. Sellu’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that the engagements significantly improved their understanding of the Association’s activities and achievements. Her leadership was widely described as pragmatic and results-driven.

Several officers highlighted the unprecedented nature of the Inspector General of Police's spouse undertaking such extensive visits to hard-to-reach divisions to directly engage police wives and personnel. They cited tangible outcomes from her initiatives, including the installation of solar-powered boreholes in barracks in Magburaka, Lunsar, Kailahun, Kenema, and Makeni, among others.

The tour concluded with renewed commitments from officers to support their spouses in advancing the Association's objectives, thereby ensuring that its welfare initiatives continue to benefit families across the country. Concerns and recommendations raised during the meetings were formally documented for follow-up action, while urgent issues—such as the procurement of water tanks and maintenance of existing boreholes—received prompt attention.
