Ports Authority Advances Port Modernization and Economic Growth

The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has reported sustained operational growth and infrastructure development, driven by strategic coordination between its governing Board and management team. Key initiatives have focused on modernizing port infrastructure, enhancing trade efficiency, and maintaining strict adherence to financial and regulatory standards.

Under the leadership of Board Chairman Hon. Manso Dumbuya, Director General Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio, and Deputy Director General Madam Judith Boi Kosseh, the Authority has maintained a steady revenue generation drive in recent years while positioning the Port of Freetown as a competitive maritime gateway in West Africa.

Current operational projects include the rehabilitation and expansion of berth facilities, the reconstruction of the perimeter security fence, and the acquisition of advanced cargo-handling equipment. These upgrades aim to increase overall productivity, improve vessel turnaround times, and align service delivery with international maritime practices.

Alongside physical improvements, the SLPHA has maintained focus on governance, compliance, and staff welfare. The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) recently commended the Authority for its statutory compliance regarding employee welfare following an unannounced assessment visit. Furthermore, institutional integrity measures have yielded an 87% compliance rating in anti-corruption assessments.

As the principal maritime entry point for Sierra Leone, the performance of the Port of Freetown plays a vital role in national import and export logistics. Reductions in operational bottlenecks directly affect trade costs, impacting businesses and consumers nationwide.

Industry experts note that while recent gains in revenue, security vigilance, and vessel turnaround times mark measurable progress, sustained strategic oversight will be necessary for the port to expand its footprint within the broader West African maritime sector.
