Power Struggle Erupts in Sierra Leone Traders Union: New Leadership Faces Hostile Resistance from Former Executives

The newly elected Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Traders Union, Koinadugu District chapter, Foday B. Marah, has expressed concerns regarding resistance from the former executive, which is impeding a smooth leadership transition and the effective functioning of the union.

In an interview with Sarah Kallay Blog, Mr. Marah acknowledged the support of the First Lady of Sierra Leone in inaugurating the new executive. However, he noted that despite their official election, the new team continues to face legitimacy challenges from various stakeholders. He revealed that although the newly elected body was inaugurated by the First Lady to serve the traders’ union, the former executive has resisted accepting their role.

Mr. Marah stated that multiple efforts have been made to engage the outgoing leadership for a peaceful handover and cooperation, especially given their fifteen-year tenure. However, he has encountered minimal cooperation from them, despite seeking their guidance and inclusion. He appealed for urgent intervention from the National Traders Union to mediate the ongoing impasse, which he described as being driven by personal interests rather than the collective welfare of the union. He lamented that their actions are motivated more by self-interest than by a desire to advance the union.

Mr. Marah also disclosed that the official union office in Koinadugu remains locked, with the keys yet to be handed over. Furthermore, the transition of bank signatory rights has stalled despite repeated engagement attempts. He explained that the union office remains inaccessible, and the official bank signatory rights have not been transferred to the newly elected executive, adding that efforts to engage both the former leadership and other external bodies have been unproductive.

He concluded with a call for unity and collaboration, emphasizing his commitment to fostering development within the union. Mr. Marah appealed for cooperation and togetherness, expressing his desire to see progress within the union moving forward.
