President Bio Calls for Greater African Voice in Global Decision-Making

President Julius Maada Bio has called for stronger adherence to international law and reforms to the United Nations Security Council during his address to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking during the General Debate on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” President Bio reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s call for greater African representation in the UN Security Council. The General Debate is being held from September 22 to 28, 2026.

President Bio also raised concerns about the management of Africa’s critical mineral resources, calling for greater value to be retained within African economies. He advocated for processing minerals at source, fairer value chains, technology transfer and greater local industrial development.

He further highlighted the issue of reparatory justice, describing it as an unfinished cause requiring continued international attention.

The President stressed the importance of upholding international law and strengthening multilateral cooperation as the global community responds to challenges including conflict, inequality, climate change and economic transformation.

He also addressed concerns over global economic arrangements, calling for stronger representation for developing countries, fairer voting power, affordable financing and improved treatment of debt within international financial institutions.

Sierra Leone’s participation in the General Debate forms part of the country’s wider engagement at the 81st UN General Assembly, where world leaders are discussing global peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, economic transformation and reforms to the multilateral system.
