The election of President Julius Maada Bio as Chairman of ECOWAS has been commended by Right Honourable Saa Emmerson Lamina, a member of Sierra Leone’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, as a historic event that enhances Sierra Leone’s position within the sub-region.

Following the election, Hon. Lamina characterized the moment as a privilege to observe and emphasized President Bio’s distinguished leadership trajectory—transitioning from a military leader who peacefully relinquished power to a democratically elected president in both 2018 and 2023—as pivotal factors contributing to his unanimous endorsement.

Lamina posited that President Bio's military background and credentials in peacebuilding uniquely qualify him to engage with the three ECOWAS member states that have recently withdrawn from the regional bloc.

He further indicated that the President’s new mandate entails increased responsibility for Sierra Leone, encompassing leadership in regional security affairs and the designation of Foreign Minister Musa Timothy Kabba as Chair of the ECOWAS Council of Foreign Ministers.

He additionally observed that Sierra Leone’s heightened prominence within ECOWAS is anticipated to yield substantial economic and diplomatic advantages. The frequent hosting of high-level ECOWAS meetings is projected to stimulate the nation’s tourism sector and contribute revenue to its economy.

Lamina also affirmed that the nearly finalized ECOWAS Military Depot in Sierra Leone, currently 95% complete, represents a strategic asset that further solidifies the country’s significance within the regional framework.
