Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio addressed student leaders at Harvard University’s Center for African Studies, delivering a powerful message on ethical leadership and the pivotal role young African scholars play in shaping the continent’s socio-economic trajectory.

The engagement forms part of President Bio’s strategic effort to deepen ties with the diaspora and engage young Africans receiving education at world-class institutions. During the discussion, Bio stressed the necessity of creating structured pathways for students to leverage their academic exposure, networks, and technical expertise toward sustainable national and regional development.

“We must empower our youth to become active changemakers and prepare them for transformative leadership across governance, commerce, and the private sector,” President Bio stated, emphasizing that the continent’s long-term prosperity relies on accountable, forward-thinking leaders capable of addressing complex global challenges.

A major focal point of the dialogue was the imperative of integrity and ethical governance. As African nations navigate rapid modernization and political transition, Bio highlighted the rising demand for a new generation of public servants and civic leaders committed to transparency and community impact.

President Bio extended his gratitude to key organizers, including Zoe Marks, Oppenheimer Faculty Director, and Chidi Blyden, Executive Director of the Center for African Studies, for providing the platform to connect with future leaders.

The university event underscores Bio's broader governance agenda, which prioritizes youth empowerment, capacity building, and human capital development as cornerstone pillars for Africa's future growth.
