President Bio Calls for Strategic Partnerships at Harvard Kennedy School

President Julius Maada Bio addressed audience members at the Harvard Kennedy School, delivering a keynote speech on Africa’s evolving role in global geopolitics and urging a fundamental shift toward mutually beneficial international partnerships.

Speaking on the theme “Africa in a Shifting Geopolitical Landscape: Leadership, Democratic Resilience and Strategic Choice,” President Bio stressed that international cooperation must translate into practical, sustainable outcomes for African societies rather than transactional arrangements.

During his address, President Bio proposed four foundational criteria that should govern every strategic alliance and development project across the continent:

  • Capacity and Skill Building: Partnerships must equip local populations with technical knowledge and expertise to drive domestic growth.

  • Job Creation and Local Enterprise: International initiatives should integrate African workers and entrepreneurs into value chains rather than marginalizing domestic industry.

  • Industrial Growth: Efforts must bolster manufacturing and productive sectors to enhance local value addition.

  • Sovereignty and Strategic Autonomy: Agreements must safeguard the right of African nations to define their own developmental goals and policy priorities.

The speech forms a key component of President Bio’s official visit to the United States, where he is meeting with academic, diplomatic, and policy leaders to advocate for democratic governance and equal economic partnerships.
