Government Establishes Five New Councils in Western Area
The Government of Sierra Leone has formally established five councils in the Western Area through statutory instruments published in the Sierra Leone Gazette Extraordinary on September 16, 2026.
The councils are Freetown City Council, Freetown West City Council, Mountain Rural Council, Waterloo Rural Council and York Rural Council.
The establishments were published in Volume CLXVII, No. 77 of the Sierra Leone Gazette Extraordinary through separate statutory instruments.
Statutory Instrument No. 13 of 2026 establishes the Freetown City Council, while Statutory Instrument No. 15 establishes the Freetown West City Council.
The Mountain Rural Council was established under Statutory Instrument No. 26, followed by the Waterloo Rural Council under Statutory Instrument No. 31 and the York Rural Council under Statutory Instrument No. 33.
The Gazette also contains statutory instruments establishing a number of chiefdoms, districts and villages across the country.
Among them are Barawa Chiefdom, Biriwa Limba Chiefdom, Bandajuma District, Bankor Village, Black Johnson Village, Bongre Chiefdom, During Village, Kamadugu Chiefdom, Kpanguima District and Lungi City Council.
Other orders cover Lunia Chiefdom, Mabala Village Chiefdom, Magbaimba Chiefdom, Majei Village, Mapaki Chiefdom, Masabong Chiefdom, N’dohahun Chiefdom, Peje Chiefdom, Tree Planting Village, Vanjelu Chiefdom, Yiraia Chiefdom and Wollay Chiefdom.
The Gazette lists the statutory instruments as Government Notices Nos. 246 to 277, published as supplements to the September 16, 2026 Extraordinary issue of the Sierra Leone Gazette.
