Pro-Democracy Advocate Augustine Marrah Warns of Instability from ECSL Appointment

Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah Esq., a prominent pro-democracy advocate, has asserted that the continuation of the current Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) Chairman's appointment, without withdrawal, poses a significant risk of premature political instability leading into the 2028 general elections.

During an appearance on AYV, Marrah emphasized that the President's withdrawal of the appointment would demonstrate responsiveness to both the domestic and international community, thereby affirming democratic principles. Conversely, maintaining the appointment, he argued, risks creating pre-election disorder.

Marrah stipulated that the requisite path forward involves the comprehensive and detailed implementation of the Tripartite Agreement of National Unity by all political stakeholders. Furthermore, he recommended that the Sierra Leone Police authorize the planned peaceful demonstration by the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) and ensure the provision of necessary security services.

He specified that if the opposition deems protest more efficacious than continuous dialogue, the security sector should collaborate with the APC to define the structure, logistics, and rules of engagement for the demonstration.

These statements underscore the escalating political tensions related to the ECSL appointment and stress the critical need for political dialogue, responsible management of opposition grievances, and strict adherence to established democratic agreements prior to the upcoming general elections.
