Maternal mortality rates in Sierra Leone have historically been exacerbated by limited access to immediate care, inadequate infrastructure, and the consequential high incidence of preventable losses. A critical intervention in the national healthcare system is now commencing.

Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone and President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development, hosted the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) at State House in Freetown this morning. The purpose was the official signing of a protocol agreement for the construction of the state-of-the-art “Emine Erdoğan Mother and Child Hospital” in Bo City.

This agreement represents a major milestone in Sierra Leone–Türkiye relations. The facility is designed to address significant healthcare infrastructure gaps by delivering modern medical services dedicated to maternal and child healthcare, including emergency obstetric care, neonatal treatment, and specialized child health support.

During the ceremony, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio characterized the project as the realization of a commitment made during prior diplomatic engagements with Turkish First Lady Emine Erdoğan at the Zero Waste Forum in Istanbul, Türkiye.

She emphasized that this initiative successfully translates bilateral discussions into tangible health benefits for the populace of Sierra Leone via the Bo City hospital project.
